William Golding was born Newquay, England. He is considered by many to be the greatest English novelist of the last 50 years.

He wrote 11 novels, the best-known being Lord of the Flies, The Spire and Rites of Passage, which won the 1980 Booker Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983, and was knighted in 1988.
