I Live in the Slums is the fifth book by Can Xue translated by Karen Gernant and Chen Zeping.
The previous books are Blue Light in the Sky (2006), Five Spice Street (2009), Vertical Motion (2011) and Frontier (2017). Karen Gernant is professor emerita of Chinese history at Southern Oregon University; Chen Zeping (who passed away in March 2022) was professor emeritus of Chinese linguistics at Fujian Normal University, Fuzhou, China. They collaborated in translating contemporary Chinese fiction for more than 20 years.
