I Live in the Slums is the fifth book by Can Xue translated by Chen Zeping and Karen Gernant. The previous books are Blue Light in the Sky (2006), Five Spice Street (2009), Vertical Motion (2011) and Frontier (2017). Karen Gernant is professor emerita of Chinese history at Southern Oregon University. Zeping and Gernant had collaborated in translating contemporary Chinese fiction for more than 20 years.
