David Diop was born in France and raised in Senegal; he is professor of 18th-century literature in southwest France

Diop’s second novel, At Night All Blood is Black (Frère d’âme, 2018), won the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, the Kourouma and Strega Europeo Prizes, and the Dutch Europese Literatuurprijs. 

In 2021, he became the first French author to win the International Booker Prize, with translations of At Night All Blood is Black now available in over 40 languages.  

His third novel, Beyond the Door of No Return (La Porte du voyage sans retour, 2021), was a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award and the 2025 Dublin Literary Award. Where the Sky Rests (Où s’adosse le ciel) has just been published in France, with translations ongoing in English, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish and Dutch.
