Elizabeth Mavor’s heroine - Hero - has an affair with the owner of a grand country estate, but her attentions then stray to the women in his life.

Hero is an antiquarian bookseller who embarks on an ill-fated affair with a wealthy married fellow antiquarian, but then proceeds to fall in love with first his wife and then his mother. This bold fictional exploration of gender and female sexuality was preceded by Elizabeth Mavor’s non-fiction work The Ladies of Llangollen, which detailed the relationship between two upper-class women that scandalised early 19th century society.
