Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was born in Cologne, Germany. She wrote 12 novels, including the Booker Prize-winning Heat and Dust.

As well as her novels, she produced five volumes of short stories. She also wrote more than a dozen screenplays, including film adapations of the novels Howard’s End and A Room with a View, for both of which she received an Academy Award. She also adapted Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day for the screen.
