Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester, England. He is widely recognised as one of the world’s finest and most versatile novelists.
Burgess served in the British army from 1940 to 1954. Soon afterwards, he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and decided to try to live by writing. His work includes criticism, scripts and translations, and a Broadway musical. He also composed three symphonies which have been publicly performed in the USA.
